Bellur Krishnamachar Sundarajaja Iyengar
Born December 14. 1918 at Bellur Kolar district [Karnataka]
Hailed as a modern rishi Iyengar set up over 100 branches of his institute in different countries. He was one of the earliest students of Tirumalai Krishnamacharaya —often referred to as the father of modern yoga. 1952 Iyengar befriended the violinist Yehudi Menuhin. He arranged for Iyengar to teach in London Switzerland Paris and elsewhere.
His 1966 book Light on yoga contains detailed instructions on how to perform more than 200 poses according to yoga journal and remains influential. It has referred to Light on yoga as the Bible of yoga. 1984 Officially retired from teaching but continued to be active in the world of Iyengar yoga.

Iyengar supported nature conservation. Donated Rs two million to chamarajendra Zoological Gardens. Mysore reckoned to be the highest amount donated to any zoo in India. Adoped a tiger and a cub in memory of his wife.
Iyengar said in interviews that at the age of 90 he continued to practice asanas for three hours and pranayamas for an hour daily. He also mentioned that he found himself performing non-deliberate pranayamas.
He passed away yesterday ie August 20th 2014 at the age of 96. May his soul rest in peace.
